So I've been thinking about building a *big* desk for quite some time now and have finally started doing so. It's U-shaped, the left and right side consist of a 2000x800x27mm slab of wood and the front of a 1400x800x27mm slab of wood. There is a ~200mm lip on the left, front and right that is aprox 10cm above the working area allowing me to place stuff there without filling up the whole work area.
